A fire broke out on a passenger ship belonging to the shipping company GNV on the evening of Wednesday, May 27, inside the port of Naples, Italy, while the ship was undergoing maintenance work.
No injuries among the crew or workers have been reported, according to Italian media reports. Firefighting teams and the coast guard managed to control the fire, which caused a temporary state of alert within the port and limited disruption to maritime traffic.
The ship involved, named “Phoenix,” is among the units of the fleet operated by “GNV,” which runs regular lines connecting Italy with Spain and Morocco, especially during the summer season, which sees peak passenger traffic.
This incident comes at a time when the company is preparing to bolster its fleets in anticipation of the return season for the Moroccan diaspora living abroad as part of the “Marhaba 2026” operation, raising questions about the potential impact of the fire on the ship’s readiness in the upcoming period.
Although there has been no official confirmation regarding the ship’s schedule within the “Marhaba 2026” trips, the owner’s data indicates that it usually relies on similar vessels to secure the Morocco routes during the summer.
