The Confederation of African Football (CAF) revealed today, Monday, December 8, 2025, the official mascot for the Africa Cup of Nations “Total Energies” 2025, which will be hosted by the Kingdom of Morocco for the first time since 1988.
The mascot, named “Assad” (أسد), is a cheerful lion wearing the official uniform of the Moroccan national team in red and green, appearing in a 29-second promotional video amidst authentic Moroccan architectural landmarks, palm trees, and festive atmospheres that reflect the spirit of African football.
The choice of the name “Assad” is not arbitrary; it carries deep symbolism. It embodies the “Lions of the Atlas,” the name given to the Moroccan national team, and simultaneously expresses the strength, pride, and courage that characterize the lion as a symbol for the entire African continent.
Additionally, the lion is considered a national animal in Morocco, specifically the Atlas lion, which used to inhabit the Atlas Mountains before becoming extinct in the wild.
The tournament, which will take place from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, will witness the participation of 24 teams competing for the most prestigious title on the African continent, amid great anticipation from African fans. Rabat, Casablanca, Marrakech, Agadir, Tangier, and Fes will be the host cities for the matches.
