Turkish security sources announced the arrest of a Moroccan citizen who was wanted internationally under a “diffusion” notice issued by Interpol. This occurred during a joint security operation on Wednesday, May 13, in the city of Istanbul.
Turkish media reported that the operation was carried out in coordination between the Turkish intelligence agency (MIT) and units from Istanbul police, following intelligence information indicating that the suspect was hiding in the Şişli district in the center of the city.
The security agencies were able to determine the suspect’s location before raiding an apartment in the mentioned district, where the individual, aged 34, was found.
Security sources indicate that the arrested person is suspected of being one of the main figures involved in drug trafficking networks and was relying on encrypted messaging applications to conceal his illegal activities.
The suspect was transferred to the police headquarters for further investigation, while inquiries continue under the supervision of the relevant authorities. After completing the legal procedures, he is expected to be referred to a center for housing foreigners in preparation for deportation according to the applicable regulations.
