A shocking video widely circulated has sparked a significant controversy after it documented the chase and killing of stray dogs in the streets of Tangier, in front of children who were screaming and crying, demanding the employees to stop.
The incident provided international and local animal rights organizations with a golden opportunity to direct sharp criticisms at Morocco, especially in light of its preparations to host the 2030 World Cup.
Details of the Horrifying Video
The clip shows people chasing the dogs with sharp tools to capture and kill them in ways described as “brutal” and “inhumane.” The incident took place in front of the public, with children present who were psychologically affected by the scene.
The International Animal Welfare Coalition (IAWPC) published the video through its accounts, accusing the Moroccan authorities of carrying out horrifying killings “without mercy” and without adhering to the humane methods they previously promised.
The organization urged anyone who rejects these practices to contact Munir Limouri, the mayor of Tangier, to demand an immediate halt to these operations, asserting that “these scenes do not represent the Morocco we want to see and live in.”
Accusations from International Organizations
The International Animal Welfare Coalition accuses the Moroccan authorities of planning to kill around 3 million stray dogs “to beautify” the cities in preparation for the 2030 World Cup. The organization confirms that the operations include shootings, poisoning, and burning, and that they have intensified since Morocco won the hosting rights. Other organizations like PETA and others joined the campaign, demanding FIFA to intervene.
Position of the Moroccan Authorities
The Moroccan authorities officially denied the existence of any plan to “exterminate” stray dogs related to the World Cup. They confirmed in their bidding file their commitment to stop random killings and adopt humane solutions.
In Tangier, Munir Limouri launched the TNVR program (Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, and Release) in collaboration with the Animal Friends Association, and efforts are underway to create a comprehensive shelter with a budget of 7.78 million dirhams.
However, residents of some neighborhoods complain about the danger posed by stray dogs, especially after attack incidents, placing local communities under dual pressure: ensuring public safety on one hand and animal welfare on the other.
