Morocco Condemns Attacks on Nuclear Safety in the UAE

The Kingdom of Morocco condemned and denounced in the strongest terms, yesterday, Friday in Vienna, the attacks that targeted the United Arab Emirates with three drones, one of which aimed at an electricity generator outside the internal perimeter of the Barakah nuclear power plant in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi.

This condemnation was expressed by the Permanent Representative of Morocco to the international organizations in Vienna, Azeddine Farhan, during a special session of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency, which took place at the request of the Arab countries that are members of the board (Morocco, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt), following the attack that targeted the Barakah nuclear power plant, which threatened the nuclear safety of the United Arab Emirates.

During this session, which was marked by the presence of the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, Mr. Farhan confirmed that Morocco reaffirms its full solidarity with the sisterly United Arab Emirates, and its support for its legitimate right to defend its security, sovereignty, and the safety of its citizens and residents.

In this context, the ambassador mentioned the firm positions expressed by His Majesty King Mohammed VI regarding the attacks that have been directed at the sisterly United Arab Emirates since the beginning of the war.

The ambassador also expressed the Kingdom of Morocco’s appreciation for the swift and transparent information provided by the United Arab Emirates, through its relevant authorities, to the International Atomic Energy Agency regarding the repercussions of this attack, and the successful measures taken to mitigate its effects, including maintaining radiation levels around the Barakah nuclear power plant, which remained within normal ranges.

Mr. Farhan also expressed Morocco’s appreciation for the ongoing efforts made by the Emirati authorities to ensure the safe, secure, and peaceful operation of the Barakah nuclear power plant, which is under the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and according to the highest international standards, welcoming the continued coordination between the agency and the relevant Emirati authorities.

The ambassador reiterated that the Barakah nuclear power plant has been designed, constructed, and operated according to the highest international standards, and under the supervision of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation in the United Arab Emirates, in accordance with the safety standards set by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

In conclusion, Mr. Farhan reaffirmed that Morocco supports the ongoing efforts of the International Atomic Energy Agency and its Director General in monitoring and following up on developments related to nuclear safety and security and safeguards in member states.
