Floods threaten the Sidi Kacem region after the water level of the Sebou River rises.

The local authorities in the Sidi Kassem region have started wide emergency intervention operations due to atmospheric disturbances in the area. These disturbances resulted in exceptional rainfall that led to an increase in water levels in several valleys, negatively affecting traffic movement on several road axes.

These interventions involved various communities within the region, where the regional authorities, the multi-service regional company, the regional directorate of equipment and transport, and civil protection services, in particular, mobilized to contain the rising water levels of the Sebou River. This water has seeped into some agricultural areas within several communities of the region.

The director of the liquid sanitation service at the multi-service regional company (Rabat-Salé-Kénitra), Younes Nzar, stated in a statement to the Maghreb Arab Press that efforts are currently focused on protecting sanitation facilities, with specialized teams conducting intensive interventions to prevent river water from seeping into the sanitation channels. This is being achieved through the use of advanced pumping equipment and machinery to block drainage channels, aiming to mitigate risks and maintain the efficiency of the network and the safety of the facilities.

For his part, the head of the exploitation and sanitation department in Sidi Kassem, Rabi Derich, confirmed that a set of proactive measures have been taken to ensure the continuity of sewage services. These measures included cleaning networks and sewage channels to avoid any disturbances, and carrying out immediate repair operations on networks that were damaged due to the intensity of the recent rainfall.

He emphasized that sandbags and protective barriers have been placed to prevent the flow of rising river water towards the network. He pointed out that the current situation is stable in the region, with technical teams remaining on alert to ensure citizens’ safety and avoid any emergencies that may disrupt the normal operation of vital services.

Regarding the road network, Amal Skoum, a technician at the regional directorate of equipment, transport, and logistics, stated that the flat geographical nature of Sidi Kassem region leads, in conjunction with heavy rainfall, to disruptions on the roads. This has prompted the relevant services to mobilize all human and logistical resources, in coordination with local authorities, to ensure the continuity of traffic movement.

She added that field interventions included opening waterways and removing mud deposits from the sides and edges of the road. Additionally, traffic signs and protective barriers have been put in place, confirming that the involved teams are operating on a 24/7 basis to ensure that this weather condition passes safely and to protect road users.
