Floods of the Grand Palace.. The community resorts to cutting electricity and sand barriers

The public authorities in the city of Ksar al-Kebir continue to mobilize all human and material resources to manage the rising water level of the Loukos River, due to the heavy rainfall that the region has experienced in recent days.

Intervention tools from the Civil Protection have been mobilized to contain the increase in the water level of the Loukos River, which has seeped into some low-lying neighborhoods in Ksar al-Kebir.

The field interventions also focus on programming limited and calculated releases of water from the Mohamed V Dam, which is at 100 percent capacity, as well as establishing sand barriers along the banks of the Loukos River, draining rainwater from the low-lying neighborhoods, cleaning and scraping wastewater channels, and alerting citizens to the necessity of avoiding flood-prone areas.

For its part, the Ksar al-Kebir municipality announced a series of field operations to mitigate the risks of flooding in some areas of the city. These include the planned and temporary disconnection of electricity in some threatened neighborhoods by the regional multi-service company, and raising citizens’ awareness about the need to take utmost precautions and avoid flood-exposed areas.

The city of Ksar al-Kebir is located on the banks of the Loukos River, whose basin extends to include the Middle Rif mountains in Chefchaouen and Larache. Heavy rainfall was recorded over the past 24 hours.

The regional authorities and other involved parties continue to maintain a state of maximum alert in Ksar al-Kebir until these exceptional weather conditions, characterized by heavy rainfall and soil saturation, pass. This is alongside rising waves and tidal conditions that restrict the drainage of river waters into the seas.
