King Mohammed VI has decided to adopt the ninth of December of each year as a national day for institutional mediation.
A statement from the Kingdom’s mediator clarified that this date corresponds to the moment of the establishment of the Ombudsman’s institution in the year 2001, which gives it symbolic and legal significance, providing it with a special depth in institutional memory, by recalling the history of the royal message during which His Majesty King Mohammed VI announced the establishment of the Ombudsman, simultaneously commemorating the date of the issuance of the royal decree number 1.01.298 regarding the establishment of this institution.
The statement highlighted that this royal decision represents an expression of the great attention that King Mohammed VI pays to the roles and tasks of institutional mediation in promoting the principles of justice and fairness, and it constitutes an additional building block in the ongoing path of entrenching the culture of institutional mediation since the establishment of the Ombudsman, with a commitment to developing its powers and competencies, culminating in the constitutionalization of the institution of the mediator as one of the independent bodies for the protection of human rights and as a national governance institution contributing to the consolidation of the rule of law, and to spreading values of integrity and transparency in administrative management.
The statement concluded that the establishment of this national day will make it an annual occasion to remind of the virtues of institutional mediation, a national moment for broad public reflection on good practices and comparative experiences in the fields of mediation, and an ideal opportunity to value the efforts made, to develop related proposals and recommendations for enhancing the foundations of citizen administration based on justice and fairness.
