The public authorities in the Tétouan region reported that the evacuation of residents from flood-threatened areas to shelter centers will start on Tuesday, February 3rd. This is part of a series of precautionary measures in anticipation of the expected weather disturbances in the region on Wednesday, February 4th.
The Head of the Economic Affairs and Coordination Department of the Tétouan Province, Mohamed Aqqa, stated that immediately after the provincial services received a red alert notice predicting significant rainfall which could reach 150 mm, a meeting of the regional follow-up and vigilance committee was held, chaired by the Provincial Governor.
During the meeting, it was decided to intensify coordination with the officials of the Loukos Watershed Agency to manage the process of emptying the reservoirs located in the region, such as the Khroub, Nakhlah, and Chérif Idrissi dams. Continuous monitoring of the water levels in the rivers was also planned.
Aqqa explained that a number of practical measures were also taken, including especially suspending classes on Tuesday and Wednesday in educational, university, and vocational training institutions.
These measures also include clearing rainwater drainage channels and monitoring black spots prone to water accumulation, especially in low-lying neighborhoods and sensitive road sections, to avoid any potential disruption in traffic.
Moreover, more than 900 personnel from security, civil protection, national emergency responders, and volunteers have been mobilized. In addition, more than 252 mobile units have been gathered, including pumping trucks and excavators.
