Morocco borrows about 4 billion dirhams from Japan

On Thursday, November 20, Morocco and Japan signed a loan agreement worth 64.577 billion Japanese yen (approximately 3.9 billion dirhams) in Rabat. This is for financing the hydro-agricultural development project for the southeastern region of the Gharb plain.

This project aims to generalize modern water-saving irrigation techniques, especially drip irrigation, to improve water resource management.

According to a statement on the subject, this funding supports a structural project that seeks to improve the efficiency of water use and enhance agricultural production sustainably over an area of 30,000 hectares in the Gharb plain.

It also includes the construction of main hydro-agricultural channels and auxiliary works, as well as securing existing infrastructure.

The loan is expected to contribute to enhancing the resilience of the agricultural sector against the effects of climate change by improving the efficiency of water resource use, securing existing facilities, and introducing advanced irrigation techniques.

The loan agreements were signed by the Minister Delegate in Charge of Budget, Fouzi Lekjaa, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Morocco, Nakata Masahiro, and the Director-General of the Middle East and Europe Division of the Japan International Cooperation Agency, Toyama Ki.

The event was also attended by the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forests, Ridouane Arachi, and the resident representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency in Morocco, Kawabata Tomoyuki.
