Mutual Benefits and Conflicts of Interest: Exploring Key Issues

Former Minister Abdel Salam Sadiqi accused the Tangier municipality of issuing a construction permit for a padel court, which contradicts the original project and the wishes of some residents on Labriire Street in the Bouabana area. He deemed this a case of conflict of interest and implied agreements known to many.

In a press conference on Monday, November 10, Sadiqi called on the public prosecutor to investigate the circumstances surrounding the land’s transformation from a children’s play area to a padel court, as well as the construction permit issued by the mayor, despite the court being in operation for a considerable time and the construction already completed.

The minister stated that this issue reflects a problem of “democracy and humanity,” expressing astonishment at the municipality’s random approach, despite ongoing developments in Morocco and increased monitoring of elected officials, as highlighted by recent statements from the Minister of the Interior.

Agreements

Despite attempts by lawyer Ismail El Karfati to downplay the former minister’s remarks and accusations, Sadiqi clearly asserted that the situation involves agreements and conflicts of interest. He pointed out that common citizens face demolition of their constructions for legal violations, while a project like this, with noted infractions, continues to operate and receives permits from the municipality, pending judicial review, which supports the former minister’s claims of “agreements.”

Sadiqi indicated that the Tangier municipality not only issued the construction permit but also ignored objections from the residents concerning the project. He described this as a form of fraud and a lack of responsibility.
