King Felipe VI of Spain condemned what he described as “the unimaginable suffering of hundreds of thousands of innocents in Gaza and the unbearable humanitarian crisis.”
In an official address on Tuesday, September 16, during a visit to Egypt, King Felipe VI stated, “The latest escalation of this conflict, which erupted following the attack on Israel nearly two years ago, has resulted in significant casualties and has turned into an unbearable humanitarian crisis, with unimaginable suffering for hundreds of thousands of innocents and complete destruction in Gaza.”
The king, who rarely takes a stance on international issues, emphasized that “this visit comes at a time of turmoil and tragedy in the region.”
King Felipe reinforced Spain’s support for Egyptian initiatives aimed at achieving a ceasefire, releasing hostages, and ensuring the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid. He also underscored the importance of a viable Palestinian state encompassing Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem, capable of coexisting peacefully and securely with Israel.
The Spanish government, which recognized the State of Palestine in May 2024 alongside Ireland and Norway, has become one of the most critical voices in the European Union regarding Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, with relations now strained.
On Sunday, the final stage of the Spanish Vuelta cycling race was canceled due to pro-Palestinian protests that drew approximately 100,000 people onto the streets of Madrid, according to local authorities.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his “deep admiration” for the protesters and suggested excluding Israel from sporting competitions “as long as the barbarity” in Gaza continues.
Israel has not had an ambassador in Spain since 2024. Additionally, Madrid recalled its ambassador to Israel last week after the Spanish government announced new measures aimed at “ending the genocide in Gaza.”
