The lawyers in Tangier stopped working on Tuesday, January 6, following a directive issued by the head lawyer in compliance with a decision made by the Bar Association in Morocco.
The head lawyer called on “all colleagues to adhere to the statement of the Bar Council issued on 2026/01/04 to completely stop work on sessions and procedures on Tuesday -2026/01/06.”
He also urged “all colleagues to maintain vigilance and a sense of responsibility, rally around their institutions and decisions, and collectively strive to succeed in the forms of struggle as required, and to be continuously prepared for any new forms of struggle that may arise in the future.”
What is the reason?
According to the Association of Bar Councils, this escalation is attributed to the Ministry of Justice’s departure from the agreed-upon participatory methodology, following a parliamentary mediation meeting.
It is considered dangerous and incomprehensible that the ministry has ignored all agreements reached during dialogue sessions and all feedback provided to it on the matter.
The association announced its absolute rejection of the final version of the law project presented to the government, which included a serious infringement on the independence of the legal profession and its basic principles. It called for its withdrawal and not to present it again unless the opinion of the Association of Bar Councils in Morocco is taken into consideration.
The association stated that female and male lawyers in Morocco would not be concerned with any professional law that does not respect the fundamental principles of the profession and its uniqueness as a humanitarian rights profession with global dimensions and a message rather than a job, nor guarantees strong advocacy that secures the right to defend citizens and contributes to achieving a fair trial and being a fundamental pillar in a democratic state.
It emphasized that parties not concerned with legislation have no right to contribute to the decision on the draft law for the legal profession and calls upon them to adhere to the limits granted to them by law.
