The European Union responds to allegations of its recognition of the “Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.”

The European Union reiterated today, Friday, that it does not recognize the alleged Sahrawi Republic, emphasizing that the presence of this entity in meetings between the European Union and the African Union does not affect this position in any way.

The spokesperson for the European Union for foreign affairs stated during the daily press conference of the European Commission, at a time when some separatist voices were excessively discussing the upcoming EU-Africa Summit from November 24 to 27 in Luanda, Angola.

After reminding that “the summits and ministerial meetings between the European Union and the African Union are organized and co-chaired by both unions,” the spokesperson for the European Union for foreign affairs clarified that “the agreed arrangements stipulate that each party is responsible for inviting its members, and the invitations sent to African members are dispatched by the African Union.”

In this context, the spokesperson was keen to emphasize that “neither the union nor any of its member states recognize the alleged +Sahrawi Republic+,” stressing that “the presence of this entity in meetings, whether at the ministerial level or at the level of heads of states and governments, does not affect this position in any way.”
