The President of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, made an official visit to the city of Ceuta on Thursday, November 20. During this visit, he confirmed that the city is experiencing the largest wave of government investment in decades. He also announced that ongoing projects will contribute to “changing the face of the city and improving the living conditions of its residents.”
During his tour, Sánchez inspected the new sea station at the port of Ceuta, then the “Virgen de África” electrical transformation station. He emphasized that these projects symbolize “the future and the return to normal life” in one of the most sensitive points on the border with Morocco.
Sánchez stated, according to local press, that the city received a total of 428 million euros in direct investments, an increase of nearly 50% compared to the previous government. In addition to 90 million euros in European funding. He confirmed that this money “has given a strong boost to Ceuta’s economy.”
He also announced that the year 2026 will witness the highest financial transfers to the city in its history, amounting to 56 million euros. He considered this evidence of “the strong and growing relationship between Ceuta and the central government.”
The government chief noted the progress of the new marine station project, which cost over 20 million euros. This station will enhance connectivity with the peninsula and improve the travel experience for passengers. He also presented new details about the submarine cable project that will electrically connect Ceuta to Spain, costing 330 million euros.
Housing Reforms and Organization of Military Presence
Sánchez also addressed the housing crisis that the city of Ceuta is experiencing. He announced the allocation of 140,000 square meters of public land for the construction of housing for youth and vulnerable groups. This represents about 10% of the total land available for development in Ceuta.
He also revealed a project to consolidate the Spanish armed forces within a single base, with an additional investment of 59 million euros.
Relations with Morocco
During his visit to Ceuta, Sánchez emphasized that relations with Morocco play a central role in the stability and development of the city. He praised what he described as “the progress that has been witnessed in bilateral relations in recent months.”
The head of government recorded “record numbers” in trade exchanges between Morocco and Spain. He stated that there is clear progress in cooperation on the migration file, which is one of the sensitive issues directly related to the border with Morocco.
He also noted the reopening of the commercial crossing between Ceuta and Morocco, and the launch of the new smart border with an investment of 22 million euros. This is a step that Sánchez says has “greatly facilitated the movement of transit and reduced wait times, whether for people or goods.”
A Political Message to Morocco
Sánchez confirmed that understanding between Madrid and Rabat is “essential” for the development of the city of Ceuta. He considered that what is being achieved today is the result of “a win-win approach between the central government and the Ceuta government.”
The Prime Minister concluded his statement by saying that Ceuta is “moving steadily towards the future,” thanks to the huge investments and joint projects that have been pending for years.
