On Tuesday, October 28, 2025, the Spanish Navy launched a two-month mission as part of maritime presence, surveillance, and deterrence operations in strategic areas near northern Morocco. The operation includes the Rock of Alhucemas, the Isles of Chafarinas, Buriana Island, the Gulf of Ceuta, and the coasts of Málaga, Ceuta, and Melilla.
During this period, according to Spanish press reports, the crew of the high-speed patrol vessel Vigía, along with an accompanying operational security team, will conduct maritime surveillance near sensitive areas in northern Morocco, in the Atlantic Ocean, the western Mediterranean Sea, and the Sea of Alboran.
The mission focuses on enhancing security and ensuring freedom of navigation in waters under Spanish sovereignty and areas of strategic interest, reflecting the Spanish Navy’s commitment to protecting national maritime territories and defending sovereignty in sensitive regions that encompass commercial routes, fishing interests, and border and environmental monitoring activities.
These operations serve as a key tool for early detection of any potential threats and provide immediate responses to maritime crises, ensuring continued monitoring and securing vital waterways for national sovereignty.
