On Sunday, October 2, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent a message to King Mohammed VI of Morocco, congratulating the king on the United Nations Security Council’s adoption of a new resolution regarding the Sahara issue.
In his message, published on his official account on X, Netanyahu stated, “I would like to congratulate His Majesty King Mohammed VI on the Security Council’s support for a resolution endorsing the Moroccan autonomy plan within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara. It is a victory for continuous and persistent Moroccan diplomacy over the years.”
Last Friday, the Security Council adopted a resolution by a majority of 11 votes to extend the MINURSO mission for an additional year. Pakistan, Russia, and China abstained from the vote, while Algeria did not participate.
The resolution reaffirms support for the political process based on the Moroccan initiative. The United States has deemed the Moroccan autonomy proposal as “the only realistic and serious option” capable of achieving a “just and lasting” resolution to the conflict.
