On Monday, October 13, the Tarajal crossing in Ceuta witnessed the exit of an empty truck, which returned a few hours later loaded with 26.8 tons of sand. The sand was sourced from a nearby area on the Moroccan side.
According to local press reports, the sand shipment was transported to facilities belonging to the construction company UTE Hoarce-Cantesa, in preparation for its use in local construction projects.
Sand is considered a natural resource that needs protection and conservation. However, it has recently emerged as a key component in Ceuta’s imports from Morocco for utilization in the construction sector, amid discussions about the cost-effectiveness and logistics of this approach for the Spanish side.
This operation comes as part of what local media in Ceuta have described as the “gradual resumption” of trade movement through the crossing. This is within a limited list of materials permitted for trade between the two sides, which includes sand, certain agricultural products, and automotive components.
