Rising Diplomatic Tensions: China Threatens an Israeli Knesset Member

Tensions between China and Israel have escalated following a stern statement issued by the Chinese Embassy in Tel Aviv on Sunday, September 21, against Knesset member Boaz Toporovsky. This comes in response to his visit to Taiwan, which China views as a “red line.”

The embassy’s warning stated, “If he does not stop at the edge of the abyss, he will fall and shatter into fragments,” referring to what it called the “diplomatic provocation” committed by Toporovsky, a member of the “Yesh Atid” party and head of the Israel-Taiwan parliamentary friendship association.

The embassy urged the Knesset member not to be deluded into thinking he could jeopardize China’s core interests or the sentiments of the Chinese people without facing consequences.

This escalation followed Toporovsky’s official visit to Taipei, where he led a parliamentary delegation of five Knesset members. They met with Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te and presented a statement signed by 72 Knesset members calling for Taiwan’s inclusion in international forums, a direct provocation to China, which considers Taiwan part of its territory.

Additionally, last week saw further tensions in Beijing-Tel Aviv relations after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused China of imposing an “informational blockade” on Israel. The Chinese embassy sharply rebuffed Netanyahu’s claims, labeling them “false allegations that harm bilateral relations,” expressing “shock and deep concern” over his comments.

The embassy emphasized that “Israel needs political wisdom and creative diplomacy, not just military operations and ongoing bombardment,” calling for an immediate halt to military actions in Gaza and urging compliance with international calls for a ceasefire to prevent further deterioration of the humanitarian situation.
