The United Nations Security Council condemned an attack by an “unknown entity” on Hamas in Qatar, notably omitting any reference to Israel, despite its acknowledgment of responsibility for the strikes.
According to Reuters, the phrasing of the statement facilitated unanimous approval from all member states, including the United States.
Israel attempted to target political leaders of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) in the attack launched on Tuesday, escalating its military actions. The United States characterized the assault as an individual move that does not align with American or Israeli interests.
Israeli UN Ambassador Danny Danon stated at a Security Council meeting regarding the attack, “This strike sends a message that should resonate throughout this hall: there is no refuge for terrorists, neither in Gaza, nor in Tehran, nor in Doha. There is no immunity for terrorists… and we will act against terrorism leaders wherever they are.”
The U.S. has consistently provided protection to its ally Israel within the UN framework. The U.S. support for the Security Council statement, which requires unanimous consent, reflects President Donald Trump’s dissatisfaction with the attack ordered by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The statement, drafted by the United Kingdom and France, emphasized the importance of de-escalation and expressed solidarity with Qatar, reaffirming support for its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The Doha operation, which faced widespread condemnation, is particularly sensitive as Qatar hosts negotiations aimed at reaching a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict and is also involved in mediation efforts.
The Security Council statement asserted, “Members underscored that the release of hostages, including those killed by Hamas, and ending the war and suffering in Gaza must be our top priority.”
