The municipality of Tangier has issued a warning to what it describes as "vulnerable groups" among beachgoers to exercise caution, particularly when swimming in the waters of the Ghandoori and Marqala beaches due to "average water quality."
While remaining silent about the condition of the municipal beach waters, the municipality indicated that both Ghandoori and Marqala beaches received a medium quality rating. Although this rating does not prohibit swimming, it calls for caution.
The term "vulnerable groups" was noted, but specifics were not provided regarding whether this refers to the elderly, children, or individuals with health concerns, nor the potential risks associated with swimming in waters of lesser quality.
Conversely, laboratory analyses showed that the water quality at Jbila 3 beach is rated as very poor, advising against swimming until environmental indicators improve.
Good Quality Beaches
The analyses conducted across various beaches indicated that Ashqar, Ba Qassim, Soul, and Mriçates received good quality ratings from the municipality.
Report from the Municipality
“Laboratory results from tests conducted on June 25 and 26, 2025, classified the water quality at several beaches around Tangier as good (Qualité Bonne). This means the waters are suitable for swimming according to established quality monitoring standards.
Beaches showing good quality results include Ashqar in all three testing locations (the center of the beach, 100 meters north, and 80 meters south), as well as Ba Qassim, Soul (Cap Spartel), and Mriçates.
Good results were also recorded at two testing stations of Ghandoori beach: the western station (S1) and the western station 300 meters from the rocky barrier (S3).
However, analyses indicated that the water quality at one station of Ghandoori beach (S2, 200 meters east of the barrier) is within the medium quality range (Qualité Moyenne). While swimming is not prohibited, caution is advised, particularly for vulnerable beachgoers.
As for Jbila 3 beach, analyses at its two stations (S1 at the center of the beach and S3, 150 meters south) categorize the water quality as very poor (Qualité Mauvaise), indicating that it does not meet health standards. Swimming is advised against until there is improvement in environmental indicators.”
