Iranian Ambassador Calls for Western Sahara Independence at Madrid Rally
The Iranian ambassador to Spain expressed support for the independence of Western Sahara from Morocco during a solidarity rally in Madrid, which was held following recent Israeli attacks.
Separatist activist Taleb Alisalem disclosed that he participated in the rally and took the opportunity to approach Ambassador Reza Zibakalam, stating, “I am from Western Sahara, and I wish victory for Iran against imperialism.” In response, the ambassador reportedly smiled and echoed the sentiment, wishing for Western Sahara to be “free and independent.”
Alisalem characterized the interaction as “a moment rich in meaning” that highlights the shared principles of resisting oppression and defending dignity.
Iranian Hostility Towards Morocco
This event comes amid deteriorating relations between Morocco and Iran. Morocco severed diplomatic ties with Iran following allegations of Iranian support for the Polisario separatists through its now-defunct connections with Hezbollah.
While Tehran has denied these accusations, asserting they are baseless, it has not concealed its adversarial stance towards Morocco. Iranian representatives at the United Nations have expressed support for “self-determination in the Sahara.”
Official Silence from Morocco
Morocco did not participate in a joint statement issued by several Arab and Islamic countries condemning the Israeli attacks on Iran, and no official comments have been made by Rabat regarding these unprecedented Israeli operations.
Israel aims to dismantle Iran’s nuclear program, claiming that Tehran has reached an advanced stage and is nearing the capability to develop nuclear weapons.
