A 39-year-old Moroccan woman died on Saturday evening, July 4, in a tragic accident that occurred during celebrations for the Moroccan national team’s qualification for the quarter-finals of the World Cup in the city of Algeciras (Khazirat) in southern Spain.
According to local press reports citing the Algeciras municipality, the accident happened around eleven p.m., when the national Moroccan flag that the victim had draped around her neck got caught in the rear wheel of the motorcycle she was riding with her husband, based on the initial investigation data.
The same sources reported that the woman sustained severe injuries after the flag became entangled in the motorcycle wheel, which led to her heart stopping, before local police intervened and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation using a defibrillator, while waiting for the medical team to arrive.
The victim was transported to the emergency department of the university hospital in Algeciras, where doctors pronounced her dead due to her injuries.
The Spanish authorities confirmed that the victim’s husband, who was riding the motorcycle, underwent a breathalyzer test, with negative results, while the local police traffic unit continues its investigations to determine the precise circumstances of the accident.
These sources revealed that the first to provide aid to the victim were elements of the Spanish Civil Guard who happened to pass by the scene of the accident after finishing their shift, where they were able to initiate resuscitation efforts before the ambulance arrived.
This accident occurred on a night that witnessed widespread celebrations among the Moroccan community in Algeciras following the national team’s qualification, filling the streets with parades, cars, and national flags.
