The Italian shipping company GNV is facing increasing pressure from consumer protection associations, following demands to compensate hundreds of passengers who were affected by a fire incident on one of its ships during a cruise, amid threats of legal action if these demands are not met.
The Italian association Adiconsum Sardegna stated in a press release that the passengers of the affected ship suffered psychological and material damages after this incident, which caused fear and confusion among the travelers, as well as disruptions and delays in reaching the designated destination.
The association added that passengers paid for a trip that was not completed as required, considering that GNV bears the responsibility to provide fair and adequate compensation corresponding to the extent of the damages suffered by the passengers due to the fire, both psychologically and materially.
The association also emphasized its readiness to enter into a collective legal action if the company does not open the door to negotiation and compensation. It noted that it will provide legal support to the affected passengers to recover their rights.
This development comes in light of the number of passengers affected by the fire incident and the extent of the damages inflicted on them, along with increasing demands for accountability and compensation. It also occurs in the context of the repercussions of recurring incidents involving GNV ships, which have been detailed in media reports more than once.
