Morocco vs Netherlands: Opta Estimates Atlas Lions’ Odds of Advancing to the Round of 16 at 25%

Rabat – As the Netherlands face Morocco in the Round of 32, they enter as the favored team. However, the Atlas Lions have already demonstrated their ability to compete with the best in the world during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The two teams will clash on June 29—June 30, local time, at Estadio BBVA in Monterrey, Mexico, with a spot in the Round of 16 on the line.

Morocco advanced to the knockout stage after an unbeaten run in the group stage. Coach Mohamed Ouahbi’s team drew against Brazil (1-1) and secured victories over Scotland (1-0) and Haiti (4-2) to finish second in Group C with seven points.

The Atlas Lions have also made history as only the third African nation to reach the knockout stage in consecutive World Cups, joining Nigeria and Ghana.

The Netherlands also performed well in their group. Under Ronald Koeman, they topped Group F, drawing 2-2 with Japan and triumphing over Sweden (5-1) and Tunisia (3-1).

Group Stage Statistics

The Dutch netted 10 goals across three matches, marking them as one of the tournament’s top scorers. Brian Brobbey leads the attack with three goals, while Cody Gakpo and Crysencio Summerville have each contributed two goals.

Morocco has also shown offensive prowess, scoring six goals in the group stage, including a record four goals against Haiti.

Midfielder Ismael Saibari has been a standout for Morocco, scoring in every group match and becoming the first Moroccan player to net three goals in a single World Cup.

Head-to-Head History

Historically, the Netherlands has the upper hand, having won their only World Cup encounter against Morocco 2-1 in 1994. The Dutch have never been defeated by an African nation in World Cup play.

Nevertheless, Morocco has showcased its ability to upset some of Europe’s major teams, famously defeating Portugal on their way to the 2022 semi-finals, and they will be eager for another impressive victory.

Opta Prediction

Opta’s supercomputer gives the Netherlands a 47.6% chance of victory, while Morocco’s odds sit at 25%. The remaining 27.4% of simulations predict a draw before extra time.

Despite the statistics, Morocco has a knack for surprising football’s elite. If the Atlas Lions can maintain their disciplined defense and capitalize on scoring opportunities, they could be in for another unforgettable night in this World Cup.
