After a year of leaving his position at the border crossing at the Tarajal border and applying for asylum in the city of Ceuta, a police officer presented footage he claimed documented the final moments before abandoning his duties.
The officer shared footage showing him continuing his duties at the border before he left his position and headed to the area controlled by Spain, where he applied for asylum.
The incident occurred on Monday, May 19, 2025, when the officer left his post in Fnideq around six o’clock in the evening, heading directly towards the border crossing.
According to media reports, the officer worked in the border area, and some sources indicate that he previously performed his duties in Tangier. He crossed into the Spanish side and immediately applied for political asylum, claiming he faced discrimination and persecution due to his rural origins (from the Rif region). He also alleged he was subjected to threats of death, psychological torture, and racism within the Moroccan security apparatus, in addition to being forced to participate in operations that conflicted with his convictions.
The Spanish authorities initially rejected the asylum request on May 23, 2025, considering the case insufficient; however, the Spanish National Court intervened and suspended the deportation decision, allowing the officer to temporarily remain in Spain.
The officer later obtained temporary residency in Spain, without a decision yet on granting him political asylum.
