Accusation of the Management of Wadi Al-Makhazen Dam for Negligence and Causing Flooding in Ksar Al-Kabir

The branch of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces in the city of Ksar al-Kabir and the regional office of the party in Larache expressed its deep concern regarding the difficult conditions that the city’s residents are experiencing due to the floods that swept through several neighborhoods, along with the severe material damage and significant psychological suffering among the affected families.

In a statement received by Tangier 7 with a copy of it, the party announced its complete and unconditional solidarity with the residents of Ksar al-Kabir, especially the families who were trapped by the water within the affected neighborhoods. At the same time, it praised the field efforts made by the local and regional authorities, the agents of authority, along with public forces and civil protection, in managing the crisis and protecting lives and properties.

In this regard, the Socialist Union held the management of the Wadi al-Makhazeen dam responsible for what it described as a “clear confusion” in managing the dam’s capacity. It considered that the lack of proactive and gradual discharge, despite the availability of warning data regarding heavy rainfall, in addition to what it described as an impulsive decision on the discharge, directly contributed to the increase in the water level of the Loukkos River and the exacerbation of the floods within the city’s neighborhoods.

The party called on the government to expedite the issuance of an official declaration categorizing the city of Ksar al-Kabir as a disaster area, allowing for the immediate activation of the provisions of Law No. 110.14 concerning the coverage of the consequences of catastrophic events, and enabling the affected individuals to claim their right to compensation without delay.

The Socialist Union also urged for the allocation of emergency funding to rehabilitate the damaged infrastructure, strengthen the banks of the river, and compensate affected families for the losses incurred to their homes and businesses, in addition to allocating exceptional budgets for the rehabilitation of the city and its infrastructure.
