The public prosecutor at the Court of Appeal in Rabat confirmed that the information circulated on some social media sites regarding the suspicious death of a Malian journalist in a hotel in Rabat due to his support for one of the Arab teams participating in the Africa Cup, and the investigation conducted about this, is false.
The public prosecutor clarified, in a statement, that on January 14, police services received a notification from a private medical team regarding the death of an individual in his apartment in Rabat. Consequently, the public prosecution ordered the initiation of a judicial investigation into the matter.
A team of judicial police, accompanied by elements from the scientific and technical police, went to the apartment where the deceased was staying in one of the neighborhoods of Rabat. The individual was identified as the late Soumari Mohamed Cheikh Tidiane, of Malian nationality, who was a freelance journalist and entered Morocco on January 2 via Mohammed V Airport.
The same source indicated that the judicial police found the Consul of Mali along with one of the deceased’s friends, who is a journalist from Mali accredited to cover the events of the Africa Cup of Nations, waiting for them in the aforementioned apartment. He informed them that he received a text message from his late friend stating that his health condition was critical, which prompted him to go directly to his residence.
Due to the inability to access the apartment, which was locked from the inside, he contacted an ambulance. Upon the arrival of the medical team at the deceased’s residence, they broke down the locked door to discover that the individual had passed away in his bedroom. There were no signs of violence on his body, and next to him were a collection of medications in addition to his personal belongings and documents.
The deceased’s body was deposited, according to the prosecutor’s statement, in the morgue after undergoing an autopsy, the results of which concluded that the death was natural, resulting from pulmonary obstruction related to severe hypertension.
