Algeria launched a new satellite into space for earth observation, called Alsat‑3A. This was done from the Chinese launch base in Jiuquan, northwestern China, on the morning of January 15, 2026.
The launch operation was supervised by Army Chief of Staff Said Chengriha, who is a minister delegated to the Algerian Minister of National Defense.
The satellite successfully took off aboard the Chinese Long March‑2C rocket, and then entered an orbit designated for remote sensing, equipped with advanced capabilities in high-resolution data collection for the earth. This is expected to enhance geographical and informational capabilities in Algeria, such as maps, digital elevation models, and geographical monitoring.
This project is part of a long-term strategic partnership between Algeria and China, which includes the development of satellites, ground systems, and training of local competencies.
Algeria has previously launched other satellites in its space series. It is now more capable in space, especially in the fields of regional planning, disaster response, and management of natural resources.
