Sandler hosted, Trump roasted.
The White House went all out on Taylor Swift this past Friday, sharing a meme inspired by the Swift-Travis Kelce wedding at Madison Square Garden.
In an Instagram post on Friday evening, the White House spoofed the Garden’s purple digital display celebrating Swift and Kelce’s “JUST&T Married,” swapping it out for “Trump Is Your President,” with an added note that reads “It’s happened!” — a message that requires minimal thought to understand.
This followed a Thursday night post featuring a collage of quintessentially American imagery, like Iwo Jima and the Miracle on Ice, overshadowed by a picture of Trump captioned “America’s Eras Tour,” making light of Swift’s prominent 2023 concert poster. The post even included Taylor’s lyric “It’s a long time coming.”
The prospect of a wedding during a national holiday seemed to irritate a Swift-sensitive president: on Friday, the White House also uploaded videos to X that combined moments from U.S. history with a Swift twist. One video announced “Next in America’s Eras Tour,” while another celebrated “America’s greatest hits, one era at a time.”
In comparison to other celebrity feuds Trump has engaged in — such as an AI video featuring himself as a doctor treating Julia Roberts and Robert De Niro for “Trump Derangement Syndrome” — this interaction felt relatively mild and even a bit begrudgingly appreciative. This is likely due to the nuances involved.
Targeting liberal movie stars is a straightforward strategy for the president, resonating well with his base. However, engaging with Swift is more delicate for Trump, who recognizes that many voters in crucial swing states admire her and her progressive views. Thus, going against her could backfire. That’s why he has expressed well-wishes for the couple, albeit while predicting their relationship might not endure.
Swift’s extravagant, music-heavy celebration on the July 4 weekend — a time Trump envisioned for his own concert — might have stung. Trump had planned a major Freedom 250 concert but saw even mainstream artists like Martina McBride and Bret Michaels — not particularly vocal progressives — withdraw from participating, unwilling to take part in a politically charged event.
Meanwhile, at Madison Square Garden on Friday, Stevie Nicks and Paul McCartney were scheduled to perform alongside the nation’s top pop star for a wedding that’s likely to be attended by a who’s who of liberal entertainers, marking a unique intersection of a wedding and a pop concert that will feature Billy Madison officiating.
Swift seems to have a remarkable impact on Trump, often occupying his thoughts. Following Trump’s deepfake posting in 2024 that falsely depicted Swift endorsing him over Kamala Harris, she clarified her stance, leading him to exclaim, “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!”
Though she has been mostly silent during this administration, Swift was vocal against Trump during the BLM protests in 2020, accusing him of “stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism throughout your presidency” and asserting he would be ousted that fall. Trump retaliated with a series of remarks diminishing his feelings toward her and implying that her liberal stance would backfire financially, a notion she seems to have defied.
Ironically, Swift’s extravagant wedding with major musical performances is exactly the kind of event Trump would likely want to oversee.
However, the fact that he isn’t could be the real source of his frustration.
