On Friday, October 31, at 8:10 PM, the United Nations Security Council will discuss the issue of Western Sahara, prior to voting on a U.S. draft resolution that, for the first time, supports the autonomy proposal, deeming it the most serious basis for negotiation and resolution of the conflict.
Moroccans are closely watching the voting process, particularly the votes of Russia and China, as they may resort to using their veto to block the resolution. This comes amid Algerian opposition, viewing the draft as a setback after years of advocating for the “right to self-determination” solely through a referendum. The new proposal suggests that self-determination can also occur through “autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty.”
