Morocco is set to introduce a new Urban Planning Police tasked with monitoring and overseeing the sector, coordinating operations related to violations, and handling citizens’ complaints.
On Thursday, a significant meeting took place at the headquarters of the Marrakech-Safi region to prepare for the launch of the Urban Planning Police. This unit will focus exclusively on urban issues and spatial monitoring as part of efforts to enhance territorial governance and improve urban management in the Marrakech region.
According to a statement from the regional authority, the meeting, chaired by Khalid El Habib, the Wali (Governor) of the Marrakech-Safi region, was attended by local authorities. It reflects a new institutional dynamic aimed at organizing and coordinating monitoring activities and addressing violations. This week, various relevant departments held intensive meetings to finalize the establishment of this police unit.
The initiative aims to improve service quality for citizens, particularly in terms of public safety and the regulation of urban planning, while also addressing related complaints, in alignment with Organic Law No. 14-113 concerning local authorities.
This step is part of a broader vision to strengthen field administrative monitoring mechanisms and to reinforce principles of transparency and accountability in local governance. It seeks to protect the urban environment from all forms of violations and illegal practices, promoting balanced and sustainable urban development.
The statement indicated that a team of specialized technicians has been selected to form the initial core of the new unit, which will include local officials and technicians from the region, the Municipality of Marrakech, and the Urban Agency.
