On Sunday, October 2, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent a message to King Mohammed VI of Morocco, expressing his congratulations to the king. This was in response to the United Nations Security Council’s adoption of a new resolution regarding the Western Sahara issue.
In a message shared on his official account on platform X, Netanyahu stated: “I would like to congratulate His Majesty King Mohammed VI on the Security Council’s support for the resolution endorsing Morocco’s autonomy plan within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara. It is a victory for consistent and persevering Moroccan diplomacy over the years.”
Last Friday, the Security Council adopted a resolution with a majority of 11 votes to extend the MINURSO mission for an additional year. Pakistan, Russia, and China abstained from the vote, while Algeria did not participate in the vote.
The resolution emphasizes support for the political process based on the Moroccan initiative. The United States has considered the Moroccan autonomy proposal as “the only realistic and serious option” capable of reaching a “fair and lasting” resolution to the conflict.
