On Friday evening, October 31, the United Nations Security Council voted in favor of a draft resolution affirming that autonomy under the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco is the most viable solution to the longstanding dispute over Western Sahara, which has persisted for more than fifty years.
The draft resolution, proposed by the United States, received the necessary majority of votes, with the five elected countries (Russia, China, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France) refraining from exercising their veto rights.
The resolution garnered 11 votes in favor, 3 against, and 1 abstention.
It explicitly recognizes the autonomy proposal presented by Morocco in 2007 as the primary negotiating framework for resolving the conflict.
