In a notable incident on Friday morning, the meeting hall of the Boumia Municipality in the Midelt Province, part of the Drâa-Tafilalet region, experienced chaotic events not previously seen in the history of local elected councils.
The ordinary session of the municipal council devolved into a scene of verbal altercations and loud shouting in front of the city’s governor. The situation escalated dramatically when a member of the council, who heads the health committee, slapped a female member, shocking and drawing public condemnation from those present.
Local outlets reported that the confrontation broke out during discussions on agenda items concerning the municipality’s public health budget. Members exchanged sharp accusations regarding poor management of health projects. In a moment of anger, the involved council member slapped the female member in front of dozens, prompting an immediate suspension of the session amid protests and calls for police intervention.
Both the assaulted member and the assailant were taken to the hospital, where each is expected to claim they were the victim of an assault.
