In a new wave of increased prices in Tangier, the cost of goods and services rose during August. The consumer price index recorded an increase of 1.1% compared to July and 1% year-on-year.
According to the regional directorate of the High Commission for Planning in the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, the monthly index for food items rose by 2.5% in August 2025 compared to the previous month.
### Rise in Food Prices
This increase was driven primarily by a 6.6% rise in fruit prices, followed by fish and seafood at 5.7%, meats at 5.1%, vegetables at 3.7%, and dairy products at 0.6%. Oils and other unclassified food items rose by 0.3%, while bread and cereals increased by 0.2%, and sugar, jams, honey, chocolate, and sweets saw a rise of 0.1%.
The index for non-food items also registered a monthly increase of 0.2%, attributed to higher transportation costs and increases in “other goods and services,” as well as “restaurants and hotels” by 0.4%, transportation by 0.3%, and “furniture, household goods, and regular home maintenance” by 0.2%.
On an annual basis, the consumer price index for food items rose by 1.7% in August 2025 compared to the same month last year. This was due to price increases in vegetables by 9.2%, fruits by 8.8%, coffee, tea, and cocoa by 7.4%, tobacco by 3.6%, unclassified food items by 2.6%, fish and seafood by 1%, and dairy products by 0.6%. Sugar, jams, honey, chocolate, and sweets increased by 0.3%.
The annual change for the non-food index showed an increase of 0.6%, reflecting variations across categories, with transportation seeing a decline of 2.8% and restaurants and hotels an increase of 4.9%.
The consumer price index aims to gauge the cost of living and measure the relative change in the prices of consumer goods over time and space, encompassing various items in the reference basket consumed by households.
