Two Israeli organizations have confirmed that their country is committing acts of genocide. On Monday, July 28, B’Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights stated that Israel is perpetrating “genocide” in the Gaza Strip, based on investigations they conducted.
In a joint statement read during a press conference in Jerusalem, the human rights organizations condemned the development of a “genocidal system in Israel aimed at destroying and exterminating the Palestinian community in Gaza.”
The organizations frequently criticize Israeli government policies regarding genocide. However, the language used in their joint announcement regarding their reports is notably more severe.
Yuli Novak, the Director-General of B’Tselem, stated, “Nothing prepares you for the reality that you are part of a society perpetrating genocide. This is a very difficult moment for us.”
She added, “As Israelis and Palestinians living here, witnessing daily testimonies and reality, it is our duty to express the truth as clearly as possible: Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinians.”
In response, Israeli Prime Minister’s Office spokesperson David Manser denied the allegation. During a press briefing, he said, “We have freedom of expression in Israel, but we strongly reject this accusation.”
He emphasized, “Our armed forces target terrorists only, not civilians. Hamas is responsible for the suffering in Gaza.”
Hamas welcomed the investigations by B’Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights, which affirm the existence of genocide in Gaza. In a statement, it noted that this documentation “serves as a clear testimony from within Israeli society itself regarding the severity of the crimes committed by the occupation against our people.”
Israel is engaged in a devastating war on Gaza, resulting in the deaths of 59,821 Palestinians, mostly civilians, according to the latest toll from the health ministry run by Hamas, which is considered reliable by the United Nations.
All residents of Gaza have been repeatedly forced to evacuate as Israel destroys vast areas of the territory. United Nations agencies warn that they are suffering from malnutrition and that famine is on the brink of affecting them.
