First Country Welcomes France’s Recognition of Palestine

On Thursday, July 24, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France will recognize the State of Palestine next September during the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Several countries have expressed their support for this decision:

Spain
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez welcomed France’s announcement, stating that it aligns with Spain’s recognition of Palestine. He asserted that this move would “protect” the two-state solution, allowing Israel and Palestine to coexist side by side. On X, Sánchez, known for his strong opposition to Israeli military actions in Gaza, said, “Together, we must protect what (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu is trying to destroy. The two-state solution is the only solution.”

Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia welcomed France’s decision to recognize the State of Palestine. The Saudi Foreign Ministry described the announcement as a “historic decision” that affirms the Palestinian people’s right to establish their own state. The ministry’s statement on X expressed the kingdom’s support for President Macron’s intent to recognize “our Palestinian brother state,” emphasizing the international consensus on the Palestinian right to self-determination and an independent state based on borders from 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Jordan
The Jordanian Foreign Ministry also praised President Macron’s intention to recognize an independent State of Palestine during the upcoming UN General Assembly. The ministry called this decision “a step in the right direction.” In a statement, it underscored Jordan’s appreciation for Macron’s decision as a significant move to counter efforts denying the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and to establish their own sovereign state on their national soil.
