Algeria and Italy have reaffirmed their support for the efforts of the United Nations Secretary-General’s personal envoy, Staffan de Mistura, regarding Western Sahara. Their objective is to resume direct negotiations aimed at achieving a fair, sustainable, and mutually acceptable political solution, in line with the United Nations Charter and relevant Security Council resolutions.
This statement was made during the fifth session of the joint governmental summit held in Rome on July 23, 2025. Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune was unable to secure Italian backing for Western Sahara’s independence from Morocco. Italy has maintained a neutral stance despite Algeria’s attempts to entice it with offers of oil and gas.
In contrast to Algeria, which has become the main party in the Western Sahara conflict and whose stance is waning due to the lack of progress on the ground, Morocco is receiving increasing support for its autonomy proposal. This proposal is considered a pragmatic and realistic solution to end the conflict, backed by major powers such as the United States, France, and the United Kingdom.
