Commencement of Construction for a New Air Terminal at Mohammed V Airport

The National Airports Office has officially announced the commencement of ground preparation work for the new terminal project at Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca. This marks the first phase of one of Morocco’s most ambitious infrastructure projects, set to be completed by 2030.

According to a statement from the office, the total investment for this project is estimated at 15 billion dirhams. The new terminal will enable an additional capacity of 20 million passengers each year, bringing the airport’s total capacity to 35 million.

These significant developments align with the national strategy “Airports 2030,” led by the National Airports Authority, which prioritizes innovation, sustainability, and connectivity.

### Duration of Work

The statement outlined that the groundwork has been awarded to the national company “Sitam” following a public tender. The construction will span eight months and serves as a crucial preparatory stage for the upcoming terminal, which is expected to become operational in 2029.

With this launch, the project transitions into the physical construction phase after several months of architectural and technical studies conducted by the international alliance of “Ala Concept,” “RSHP Architects,” and “Egis Bâtiments International.” This coalition has a proven track record in designing internationally renowned airports in cities such as London, Madrid, and Geneva, and aims to reflect Morocco’s vision of robust economic and tourism connectivity.

As a significant continental hub, Casablanca will enhance its strategic role linking Europe, Africa, and the Americas, coinciding with the ongoing growth of Royal Air Maroc.

The terminal is designed to be a state-of-the-art facility, offering a seamless digital experience for travelers alongside high energy performance standards and increased resilience to climate change. It will also integrate a high-speed train station, connecting the airport to Rabat in 30 minutes and to Marrakech in under an hour.

To ensure excellence in execution, a call for expressions of interest has been launched to identify the most qualified companies for the project. This preemptive step aims to pinpoint the most competent firms.

This call concluded in May 2025 and successfully attracted bids from 27 Moroccan and international alliances with extensive expertise in complex airport infrastructure.

With the initiation of ground preparation work, the National Airports Office is advancing the “Airports 2030” strategy, further cementing Casablanca’s position as an indispensable air transport hub. The airport is poised to showcase Morocco on a global stage during the 2030 World Cup, representing a new era of connectivity, growth, and international prominence.
