The public authorities in the city of Ksar al-Kabir launched, on Sunday, February 1st, awareness operations in anticipation of heavy rainfall. The measures included practical actions to accompany and guide citizens in neighborhoods at risk of flooding, and to urge them to positively interact with the measures taken. This particularly concerns evacuating areas at risk and interacting with warning weather bulletins.
This came after the Directorate of Meteorology issued an updated warning bulletin, warning of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms starting from six in the morning on Monday until noon on Tuesday, with measurements ranging between 50 and 80 mm, in regions that fall within the watershed of the Loukkos River, particularly in Wazan, Chefchaouen, and Larache, which warns of a renewed rise in the water level of the river.
On another note, the Royal Armed Forces, in cooperation with local authorities, established several centers to shelter the affected population. Among these are centers in the Abd Al-Salam Al-Ghrisi Stadium in the Al-Nahda neighborhood and the Karim Al-Ahmadi Stadium in the Al-Salam neighborhood. These centers are capable of sheltering hundreds of families in good conditions.
The establishment of these shelters comes as part of the implementation of instructions from King Mohammed VI, the Supreme Commander and Chief of General Staff of the Royal Armed Forces, where a number of units specialized in rescue, relief, logistical support, and medical care have been mobilized to support and assist the affected population.
Water-resistant tents have been furnished and equipped in these centers to welcome families who were forced to leave their homes submerged in water. Essential and necessary services have also been provided during these special circumstances being experienced in the city of Ksar al-Kabir.
Moreover, Red Crescent volunteers have spared no effort to provide assistance during this time by offering relief services and semi-medical support to the elderly and women, along with equipping first aid units to respond in cases of necessity.
It is noteworthy that many families in Ksar al-Kabir took advantage of the temporary improvement in weather conditions, after the rain stopped and the waters of the Loukkos River partially receded on Saturday and Sunday, to organize their relocation to safe areas. Additionally, public authorities continue to make efforts to assist citizens and individuals residing in flood-threatened areas.
