Moroccan Army Establishes Control Over Dar Baroud Tower in Tangier

On July 7, the Moroccan Army announced that the Dar Al-Baroud Tower in Tangier, a military and historical site, has been placed at its disposal.

In a statement, the Royal Armed Forces noted, “As part of the responsibilities outlined for the Military History Directorate under the royal decree number 1.99.266, issued on May 3, 2000, the Dar Al-Baroud Tower in Tangier has been made available for the Royal Armed Forces.”

The tower houses a center dedicated to showcasing the historical fortifications of the city, which supports efforts to preserve Morocco’s military and historical heritage. This initiative aims to enhance awareness of the historical and cultural value of military fortifications in Tangier, with the Dar Al-Baroud Tower serving as a prominent symbol of Morocco’s military heritage.

Through this center, the Military History Directorate intends to highlight the strategic and historical significance of these landmarks while enabling the Royal Armed Forces to utilize the facility for various activities.

This initiative forms part of the Royal Armed Forces’ broader vision to maintain historical and military heritage, strengthen connections to national identity, and provide educational and cultural spaces for current and future generations.

Dar Al-Baroud Tower

The Dar Al-Baroud Tower in Tangier is a military fortress dating back to the 15th century, located in the northeastern corner of the old city. It was among the first defenses against attacks across the Strait of Gibraltar and includes ammunition stores, various cannons, and a military basement.

The tower gained particular importance during the Alaouite period, as Sultan Moulay Ismail reinforced its defenses after recapturing Tangier from the English in 1684. Additionally, Sultan Hassan I introduced Armstrong cannons in 1880. The tower features a historic door dated 1214 AH (1799-1800 AD), showcasing a blend of European and Moroccan architectural styles.
