Transport and Logistics Minister Reports Increase in Traffic Fatalities in Morocco
Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdel Samad Kyoh, announced that Morocco recorded 4,024 fatalities from traffic accidents in 2024. He indicated that 2025 is also expected to see an increase in both fatalities and injuries from accidents.
During a session of the Permanent Committee for Road Safety, Kyoh revealed that final statistical data for 2024 showed over 143,000 traffic accidents, marking a 16.22% increase compared to 2023. This resulted in a 5.37% rise in fatalities.
For the first five months of 2025, preliminary data indicates a continuing upward trend, with an increase of nearly 21% in fatalities and serious injuries compared to the same period in 2024.
Urgent Program for Summer 2025
In response to the rising figures, a series of urgent measures for summer 2025 were approved during a recent meeting. These measures include increased speed monitoring for all vehicle types and stricter checks on helmet use for motorcyclists. The aim is to ensure compliance with safety standards.
There will also be enhanced enforcement of traffic regulations through mobile monitoring units operated by the National Police. Regulations against reckless driving and oversight of public transport vehicles will be reinforced.
The committee concluded with key decisions, including the establishment of a “Vigilance Committee” to oversee the implementation of field activities and to monitor challenges in real time. Regional monitoring committees are called upon to create and implement work plans for the summer period, aligning with the urgent program directives.
Among the planned measures are the installation of cameras in urban areas and along highways to monitor and record traffic violations automatically. Additionally, processes will be enacted to temporarily suspend vehicle ownership transfers and annual vehicle tax payments until fine amounts are settled. This will be in cooperation between the National Road Safety Agency and the General Directorate of Taxes.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office will issue a circular to legal representatives in various courts to support the implementation of the urgent road safety action plan, ensuring adherence to the law.
Technical inspections for motorcycles exceeding 50 cc will be enforced to ensure compliance with safety standards. Audits will be conducted for manufacturers and distributors of motorcycles to ensure adherence to legal specifications.
Efforts will also focus on enhancing awareness campaigns through various media, aiming to engage the targeted demographics in road safety initiatives during the summer.
New Monitoring Tools
During the meeting, new road monitoring tools were presented, including speed measurement devices for motorcycles and self-towing radar systems to monitor vehicle speeds in both directions, as well as systems to verify vehicle chassis numbers.
An agreement for cooperation in road safety was also signed between the National Observatory of Crime and the National Road Safety Agency. This agreement will facilitate the exchange of statistical data related to road safety, monitor risky behaviors on the roads, and support law enforcement and civil society capacity-building efforts.
