The French Press Agency revealed that the Algerian detained in connection with the violence of Senegalese fans at the Moulay Abdellah Stadium during the Africa Cup final works as a sports management expert.
The agency, citing his lawyer Jawad Ben Aïssi, stated that the Algerian holds French nationality and is under detention, but he believes that his arrest “was a mistake and that he is not involved in the violence.”
Additionally, the judiciary decided to pursue 18 Senegalese supporters in connection with the riots during the Africa Cup final match between Senegal and the host Morocco, according to what the defense agency informed the French Press Agency on Thursday.
Defense committee member, lawyer Naima Al-Kalaf, stated that the accused are being prosecuted while in detention by a decision of the public prosecutor, and that they appeared on Thursday before the court in an initial session that was quickly adjourned at the request of the lawyers and the civil party “to prepare the defense.”
The trial session is scheduled for January 29 in Rabat.
The accused were arrested on Sunday on suspicion of involvement in the riots that occurred inside the Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat during the Africa Cup final, which Senegal won against Morocco 1-0, according to a judicial source on Monday.
