The Royal Moroccan Football Federation announced on Monday, January 19, that it will resort to legal processes with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the International Football Federation (FIFA) to settle the withdrawal of the Senegalese national team from the final match against the Moroccan national team.
The federation clarified in a statement that the appeal to CAF and FIFA also comes in light of the events surrounding the withdrawal decision, following the referee’s announcement of a correct penalty, agreed upon by experts. This significantly affected the regular flow of the match and the players’ performance.
Conversely, the Royal Federation expressed its deep gratitude “to all the Moroccan fans who remained loyal to the national team through their strong presence and exemplary support in all the national team matches and other games.”
It was noted that FIFA President Gianni Infantino condemned the behavior of some Senegalese players following the chaotic scenes during the Africa Cup of Nations final. This occurred after the champions temporarily left the pitch in protest against a penalty awarded to Morocco.
The Senegalese coach later acknowledged his mistake and issued an official apology. He said, “I apologize to football. I regret asking the players to leave the pitch. Upon reflection, I decided to bring them back. Sometimes we act impulsively, but we accept the referee’s mistakes and apologize to football.”
