23 people died, and 2,786 others were injured, 97 of which were serious injuries, in 2,113 traffic accidents recorded in urban areas during the week from January 5 to 11 of this year.
A statement from the General Directorate of National Security attributed the main causes of these accidents, in order, to drivers’ inattention, failure to respect the right of way, lack of control, pedestrians’ inattention, excessive speed, failure to maintain a safe distance, failure to comply with the stop required by the “Stop” sign, illegal changes of direction, improper overtaking, driving in a prohibited direction, driving on the left side of the road, failure to comply with the stop required by the red traffic light, changing direction without signaling, as well as driving under the influence of alcohol.
Regarding monitoring and penalization operations in the field of road traffic, the same source clarified that the security services managed to record 45,293 violations, prepare 6,503 reports sent to the public prosecutor’s office, and collect 38,790 administrative fines.
The statement indicated that the amount collected reached 8,656,075 dirhams, while the number of vehicles placed in the municipal pound was 4,681 vehicles, the number of documents withdrawn was 6,503 documents, and the number of vehicles that were subjected to seizure was 513 vehicles.
