The National Geographic Institute (IGN) in Spain reported on Friday morning, December 5, that an earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale was detected near the Costa del Sol coast.
The epicenter of the quake was in the Fuengirola area at 10:38 AM local time, at a depth of about 78–79 kilometers below the sea surface.
Spanish media sources reported that the earthquake was felt in several Andalusian provinces, including Málaga, Seville, Córdoba, and Granada. No reports of material or human damage have been recorded, according to the relevant authorities.
Following the incident, the Andalusian government activated the “pre-emergency phase” to enhance coordination between the relevant authorities and intensify media efforts and communication with citizens in anticipation of any aftershocks or developments.
