The Truth Behind the Destruction of Ancient Rock Carvings in Guelmim

The National Council for Human Rights has denied claims regarding the alleged vandalism of a rock heritage site in Guelmim.

In a statement, the Council addressed recent claims circulating on social media and various news outlets about the potential destruction of an archaeological site containing rock engravings of significant historical and scientific value at the Bouadieu Mountain site in the Tghjijit region of Guelmim. The Council and its regional committee responded swiftly to assess the impact of nearby work sites.

A team from the Regional Human Rights Committee of Guelmim-Oued Noun visited the area last Friday to investigate these allegations. The committee found that the rock engravings site remains intact and has not suffered any damage, despite signs of rock removal near the mountain’s edge.

The statement noted that the regional committee has informed relevant authorities, including local and elected officials and the regional cultural directorate, while also engaging with civil society organizations concerned about the matter.

On this occasion, the National Council for Human Rights emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and protection of rock engraving sites to preserve national rock heritage as a fundamental component of collective memory and cultural identity.

The Council also acknowledged the growing awareness of the importance of maintaining this heritage and protecting local characteristics among various civil actors, relevant sectors, and civil society organizations. It called for continued efforts to raise awareness of the role this heritage plays in regional development.
