Water and Forests Explains Reason for Tree Felling in Al-Burj Forest near Tangier

The National Agency for Water and Forests has reported that the Boureg forest, located near the city of Tangier, is undergoing legitimate technical and preventive forestry work. This initiative is part of a project to construct and install a high-voltage electrical line.

In a statement, the agency clarified its aim to inform the public and address misconceptions circulated by various media outlets regarding the alleged complete removal of trees in the Boureg forest by unknown parties. The agency confirmed that there is no illegal exploitation of forest resources; rather, the work is being carried out by the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water—Electricity Sector—as part of the project intended to transport energy generated from the Tangier 2 wind farm.

The source noted that this project, which spans 2,440 meters and traverses the forested area, has received the necessary approvals from the National Agency for Water and Forests. It was also endorsed by the Melloussa municipal council during its regular session. This is in accordance with current legal provisions, notably the royal decree issued in 1917 concerning forest preservation and the 1976 royal decree related to community participation in forestry economic development.

The agency emphasized that the forestry work, which includes clearing and cutting trees along the high-voltage line route, is primarily aimed at preventing fire risks that may arise from electrical short circuits. These operations are conducted under technical supervision and direct field monitoring by forestry services, adhering to established technical standards.

The agency urged media outlets and the public to exercise caution and verify any unreliable information being reported. It expressed its readiness to provide accurate and reliable information and welcomes any requests for clarification or inquiry to eliminate any misunderstandings.
