Residents of the “Ikhlas” neighborhood in Tangier have expressed dissatisfaction with the services provided by the waste management company “Arma.” They reported that piles of garbage have been accumulating for several days within the community and that there are not enough waste bins to meet the area’s population density.
A video recorded by a resident on Thursday, July 10, depicted a street corner turned into a makeshift dumping ground. Residents questioned the role of the Tangier municipality in overseeing Arma’s operations and its adherence to proper service management.
This is not the first complaint regarding Arma’s poor services in Tangier. There have been previous reports of waste accumulation in various parts of the city, along with delays in the company’s response to collect and clean the areas. In some instances, Arma’s trucks faced criticism for leaking waste liquids while in transit.
The issues with Arma are not solely environmental; they extend to the social rights of its workers. In May, Arma employees protested against the “brokerage” contracts that deprive them of formal employment rights and benefits. They have also raised concerns about poor working conditions and low wages.
More alarmingly, recent reports have emerged indicating that Arma has been dumping waste liquids into the Mediterranean Sea in Tangier, raising serious environmental and public health concerns.
